I am always drawn to how writers are able to take a single plot or incident and fashion it into a storyline with a few characters, and to the necessity of resolving a conflict within a given space of dramatic structure. It’s not about the length of the story, but about the reading experience – you can move into different creative worlds in a shorter space of time.
Here’s a site that takes a novel take on short stories. The folks at Symphony Space invite actors from stage, screen and television to read classic and new short fiction. The readings, made at New York’s Symphony Space and on tour around the US, are recorded live and broadcast on public radio stations. The show is hosted by Isaiah Sheffer, the Founding Artistic Director of Symphony Space, a renowned performing arts center on Broadway.
Luckily for you and me, the Selected Shorts audio programmes are available online as podcasts. It’s called PRI: Selected Shorts Podcast. Do check it out. It opens up a whole new world of literature, and the readers have a unique way of bringing the stories and characters to life.
The site itself www.symphonyspace.org has a lot more to offer, from music and film to theatre and dance.
Hi, any chance you have past podcasts of SS? I'm missing a bunch from this year and have none before 2010. Would love to hear them. thanks.
