Daughter of Fortune (1999)

Daughter of Fortune is a novel by Isabel Allende, translated from Spanish by Margaret Sayers Peden. In Spanish it reads La Hija de la Fortuna.

It’s the story of Eliza Sommers, an orphan raised by Victorian sister and brother Rose and Jeremy Sommers in the British colony of Valparaiso in Chile. Eliza falls in love, and the rebellious force within her sets in motion a chain of events that sees her journeying to the heart of the Californian gold rush. She is searching for her lover Joaquin Andieta, the father of her unborn child. Helping her is Tao Chi’en, a Chinese doctor, himself in search of a new life.

This historical novel is narrated in the most straightforward manner, ensuring that every line adds a meaning to the entirety. There is a sense of mystery, because we are constantly wondering about Rose’s past, Eliza’s parentage and Joaquin’s identity. There is also the constant presence of danger and adventure, in among the multitudes that rush to California and their thirst for gold and riches. Tao’s past is entwined in a colonial subtext, and adds rich detail to the story as well as to the time.

It appears everyone is in search of freedom – a freedom that fashions itself out of each individual’s experiences. They uncover aspects of themselves that surprise both the reader and the characters, and they learn how to define who they are.

The novel delves straight into the dark side of the gold rush in which many perished and scores of others were subjected to unending misery. From the bandits, prostitutes, thieves, vigilantes to the adventurers, shrewd businesswomen and entrepreneurs, it’s a melting hotpot of humanity all affected by gold fever.

It makes for a great read, and curiosity will keep you turning those pages. The follow-up novel to Daughter of Fortune is Portrait in Sepia, which draws in characters from the former. For info on other works by Allende visit www.isabelallende.com
